Nation Builder

Nation Builder is a non-profit trust that brings together social investors, NPOs, and consultants, fostering dialogue and collaborative learning, to strengthen South Africa’s social impact sector.

Founded in 2008, it was born out of a steadfast belief in the future of South Africa and in business’ powerful role in effecting positive social change in our nation.

Recently, Valcare, an NPC focused on social investment and strengthening NPOs, took over the strategic and operational mandate from Mergon.

Nation Builder, under new leadership and supported by some of the original Nation Builder board, remains committed to inspiring and equipping businesses in South Africa for greater social impact.

Nation Builder provides free best-in-industry resources and tools, an interactive peer-learning community, and collaborative learning opportunities with like-minded businesses. This learning and knowledge sharing requires a holistic view where NPOs, businesses and communities on the ground contribute to the richness of the content.

Going further together, Nation Builder’s new era of impact

When coming together to serve a vision bigger than our own, extraordinary things can happen. For the past 16 years in Nation Builder, we’ve seen this to be true. In recent years, Valcare and Nation Builder journeyed together with a common goal to strengthen South Africa’s social impact sector. Both serving as 'bridge builders' between the business and non-profit sectors, these two organisations are now becoming one. Mergon’s Keri (and former Nation Builder head) shares on the exciting opportunities in which the new team can leverage their collective strengths to further benefit the social impact sector.

A renewed focus on partnership and collaboration

With the haze of COVID-19 gradually lifting, early 2022 was an opportune time to pause and reflect on the value of Nation Builder’s contribution and to discern what the next season would hold. A host of social stressors had been added to South Africa’s landscape due to the effects of COVID-19, riots, floods, loadshedding, rising unemployment and more over the past few years. For South Africa’s social development sector and the country at large to cope with these massive challenges, it was clear to practitioners and grassroots leaders alike that greater collaboration was needed.

14 years ago a two-woman team in Mergon launched an audacious dream called Nation Builder. But like all things God calls us to, the vision was far bigger than their capacity to fulfil it and required His grace and leading. In this condensed CEF white paper, executive head of Nation Builder and Ziwani, Keri Paschal, shares the history of Nation Builder – one that she likens to a ‘David’ up against the ‘Goliath’ of South Africa’s social inequality.
