The Gap Fund was set up as a distribution platform for small grants to financially support indispensable NPOs during the hight of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Standing in the Gap for our NPOs
NPOs play a vital role within our communities across Africa and faced severe challenges during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. Many of these NPOs saw their funds decrease, whilst the need for their services grew exponentially. This left those on the frontline, caring for thousands of vulnerable people, under increasingly crippling funding pressures.
As a Foundation, we felt compelled to help the non-profit sector carry the load and so the Mergon Gap Fund was born. The Mergon Foundation has a long history of carefully selecting exceptional NPO partners who have a track record of delivering essential services to communities in need. We have partnership bases in South Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa.
The Gap Fund raised over R8 million over the last year and made contributions to a total of 252 beneficiaries. We are so thankful to every individual and organisation who contributed so generously toward the Gap Fund. Your support allowed these NPOs to not just continue their valuable work, but in many cases, enabled them to step up and fulfil an even bigger role than they had previously.
NOAH (Neighbourhood Old Age Homes) is just one example of an indispensable organisation that is supported by the GAP Fund. Caring for hundreds of social pensioners to help keep them healthy, connected, and contributing to their families and communities, NOAH had to adapt fast during the COVID-19 crisis. They have 11 communal homes for social pensioners in the greater CapeTown area as well as community centres in Woodstock and Khayelitsha that offer a place of belonging and socialising. MES and The Message Trust: Juan’s story showcases how NPOs are truly a lifeline for many. During lockdown he experienced first-hand the care, concern and help of two NPOs who worked together to not only feed him and get him off the streets, but also reunite with his family, join in a skills development course and start on a journey towards a meaningful life.
